VOLUNTEER

One of the most popular varieties of holiday that can take you off the beaten track and away from other tourists is as a volunteer holiday-maker. There are many different types of volunteer holidays, and each has their own unique benefits for the environment and global community.

Perhaps the most well known type of volunteer work you can undertake whilst holidaying in another country is as an aid worker. This work may involve building projects in impoverished areas, or perhaps working as a teacher or health-care volunteer in one of the many clinics run by aid organisations

While any volunteer work can be challenging, it does allow you to experience another country and culture in ways that your average tourist cannot. You also get the added bonus of feeling that you've given back to the community, and in your spare time you can see the sights!

Another great way to lend a helping hand while on vacation is to volunteer with a conservation organisation. There are a number of conservation groups in a large number of countries who appreciate volunteers, whether it is to work in the outdoors on horticultural or agricultural schemes, or with wildlife conservation groups.

There are a number of organisations within the UK that also gratefully accept any volunteer work on offer (such as the National Trust), and this can be a great way to protect and improve your local environment.

Although not strictly volunteering, there are also a huge number of English-teaching opportunities in many countries around the world, which offer basic pay.
